Lithgow received a Tony Award for his Broadway debut in The Changing Room (1973), and then acted alongside Meryl Streep in several plays in 1976.
He is perhaps best known for his television roles, particularly as Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun (1996-2001) for which he won three Emmy Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.
