An oddball hybrid of porn film and message movie.
An international banker on the lam receives shelter, uninhibited sex and lectures about American imperialism from a curvaceous Nicaraguan nurse in “Now and Later,” an oddball hybrid of porn film and message movie. Given that an entire generation’s mantra was “Make love, not war,” there’s nothing inherently incongruous about juxtaposing sexual intercourse and political discourse. But without fully fleshed-out generic or social contexts, left-wing documentarian Philippe Diaz‘s preachy mix of graphic free love and polemical diatribe fails to mesh as fiction, though it does make for superior porn. Unrated pic, opening Feb. 18 in Gotham, might attract curiosity seekers.
The banker (James Wortham) and the nurse (Shari Solanis), holed up in her Los Angeles rooftop pad, engage in no fewer than eight separate explicit consensual acts, all smilingly offered by the free-spirited caregiver to teach the uptight capitalist how to live in the now. Indeed, the title refers to the names the characters give each other: she is Now, he is Later (no kidding). The lessons in realpolitik, filtered through backstory (her parents were killed by American-backed Contras), serve as ideological pillow talk.
